Cool Mist Humidifiers: The Nursery Must-Have You Never Knew You Needed

One of the most overlooked nursery must-haves is a cool mist humidifier. You've got your crib, changing table, and dresser, and have filled all the drawers with diapers and cute little clothes. But you've forgotten something very important. If you aren't using a humidifier to help create the ideal breathing environment for your little one. Your nursery is not yet complete. Humidifiers, specifically ones that utilize a cool mist,  are great gadgets to have set up in your nursery and they have more benefits than you may think.

Benefits of a Humidifier

Cool Mist Humidifiers

Most people think of using a humidifier only when their infant is ill or are feeling a little under the weather. However, utilizing a humidifier every day has tons of great benefits:

  • Helps protect baby's sensitive skin. Adding moisture to the air helps the skin retain its natural moistness. And preventing your little one's sensitive skin from drying out or becoming irritated.
  • Decreases congestion. Babies are more susceptible to congestion, but increasing the humidity in the air can help with this. Harsh, dry air results in more congestion, frequent sore throats, dry sinuses, and stuffy noses.
  • Eases cold symptoms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Both advise against giving children cold medication before the age of 2. This can leave your little one suffering, and leave you feeling like there's nothing you can do about it. But the moisture from a humidifier can help thin out nasal secretions, making the nasal passages more clear. Plus, with your pediatrician's okay, you could even add a few drops of a symptom-soothing inhalant
  • White noise. White noise has been shown to make babies fall asleep significantly faster when used on a regular basis. The noise can be part of your bedtime routine. Helping your baby associate comfortable sleep with the noise of the cool mist humidifier. And we all know that better sleep for baby = better sleep for everyone else.

Overall, humidifiers can help babies sleep more peacefully and comfortably on any given day, not just when the common cold urges you to bring out your humidifier.

Cool Mist vs. Warm Mist

While both sets of humidifiers do have their pros and cons, cool mist humidifiers take the cake because it all comes down to safety. Contrary to warm mist humidifiers, cool mist does not require the use a heating element and does not boil the water. The hot water could cause burns if your little one (or you) were to come into contact with it. Which could be disastrous if it was tipped over accidentally or mishandled.

Here are more reasons you should consider cool mist over warm mist:

  • The lack of heating elements can mean a cool mist humidifier will be a little more gentle on the bank account.
  • Works better in larger areas.
  • Warm mist humidifiers are harder to clean because the boiling process leaves behind mineral deposits that solidify onto the sides of the container.
  • Cool mist ones usually use a fan to disperse the micro-fine cool mist, contributing to the gentle hum of white noise to help your baby sleep.

Ultimately, cool mist humidifiers and warm mist humidifiers are equally effective in humidifying the air. And by the time the vapor reaches the airways, it's the same temperature whether it starting out warm or cool. Both types need to be cleaned often (every 3 days minimum) and help moisturize the air while simultaneously purifying it. But in the end, you can't argue that cool mist humidifiers are safer when there are children around.

In Conclusion

As you can see, using a cool mist humidifier in your baby's nursery has a wide variety of benefits such as healthier skin, happier noses, and better sleep. Creating optimal breathing conditions is one of the best things you can do to help your baby sleep, making a cool mist humidifier one of the best nursery gadgets you can own.
